Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge regarding smoking hazard messages on cigarette packaging and students’ smoking attitudes at Sleman Yogyakarta High School.

Research methodology: This research employed a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 136 male students, with data collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using the chi-square test.

Results: The findings indicate that most respondents (73.5%) had a good level of knowledge, while 55.1% showed a positive attitude (not interested in smoking after seeing cigarette warning messages). The chi-square test result (p = 0.002) indicates a significant relationship between knowledge level and smoking attitudes.

Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between students’ knowledge of smoking hazard messages and their smoking attitudes, where higher knowledge is associated with more negative smoking behavior (reduced smoking interest).

Limitations: This study is limited to one school setting with a cross-sectional design, so it cannot establish causality and may not be generalizable to broader populations.

Contribution: This study contributes empirical evidence for school-based health promotion strategies by highlighting the importance of cigarette warning labels in shaping adolescent smoking attitudes
