The Correlation Between Knowledge and Perception of Residents on Choice of Generic Branded Drugs

https://doi.org/10.35912/simph.v1i2.4328

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge and perception of residents regarding generic and branded drugs and their influence on drug choice in Barangay Bapor, Masbate City.

Research Methodology: A descriptive-correlational design was employed involving 180 respondents aged 18 years and above. Data were collected through structured questionnaire surveys using a Likert scale. Random sampling was used, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis.

Results: Findings show that respondents have a generally high level of knowledge about generic and branded drugs. However, their perception tends to favor branded medicines. Demographic profile correlates significantly with knowledge but not with perception. Both knowledge and perception were significantly related to the choice of drug. Most respondents (68.9%) preferred branded drugs over generic alternatives.

Conclusions: Knowledge alone does not fully determine drug preference, as perception plays a stronger role in influencing the choice between generic and branded medicines.

Limitations: The study is limited to one barangay and relies on self-reported data, which may restrict generalizability and introduce response bias.

Contributions: This study provides insights for healthcare stakeholders and policymakers to improve public understanding of generic medicines and reduce misconceptions influencing drug selection behavior.
