Assessment of Counsellors’ Professional Competence and its Effect on the Effectiveness of Guidance services in Public Secondary Schools in FCT, Abuja
Abstract
Purpose: This study assessed counsellors’ professional competence and examined its effect on the effectiveness of guidance services in public secondary schools in FCT, Abuja.
Research Methodology: A descriptive survey research design was employed involving 95 respondents (20 counsellors, 55 teachers, and 20 principals). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire (CPCGEAQ) based on a four-point Likert scale. The instrument was validated through face, construct, and content validity by experts. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 with descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: The findings indicate that counsellors in public secondary schools in FCT Abuja are professionally qualified and competent. Effective guidance services significantly contribute to reducing behavioral problems, improving academic motivation, enhancing mental health awareness, and promoting career readiness among students.
Conclusions: Counsellors’ professional competence plays a crucial role in improving the effectiveness of guidance services and positively influences students’ academic, social, and psychological development.
Limitations: This study had a relatively small sample size and focused on public secondary schools in FCT Abuja, which may restrict generalizability. The use of self-report questionnaires may also have introduced response bias.
Contributions: This study provides empirical evidence on the importance of counsellors’ professional competence in enhancing the effectiveness of guidance services. It also offers practical recommendations for policymakers and professional bodies to strengthen counsellors’ capacity through continuous training and development programs.
