The new roles of Legon Botanical Garden as visitor destination in Ghana

Abstract Purpose: This study aims to examine the travel motivations and determine the most attractive facilities of visitors to the University of Ghana’s Legon botanical garden in Accra, Ghana. Research Methodology: The study relied on convenience sampling method to administer structured questionnaires to 127 visitors to the Legon botanical garden.  Results: Findings show that the main reason for visiting the garden is to admire the beauty of the garden which is the main reason for establishing botanical gardens. The most attractive facility in the garden, however, turns out to be the canopy walkway and the lawn. Conspicuously missing is the fact that they did not avail themselves to enquire or demand to know tree species and their names in the garden. Limitations: The study is limited to only adults who visited the garden at the time of the study even though they are on the minority compared to children. Also, the study is limited only to the Legon botanical garden even though it is not the only garden in Ghana. Contribution: This study contributes to the knowledge in the social sciences by pointing out the most important reasons why people are visiting botanical gardens. This is because the number of visitors seems to be increasing in Ghana. However, the findings show that the visitors do not visit the garden for education, research or conservation purposes but for leisure activities which is not the main reason for establishing these gardens. The correlation that distance between world heritage sites and international airports has on visitation levels

Purpose: This article illustrates the comparative analysis that was performed on the 2018/2019 official databases of international airports and UNESCO WHS. This analysis was carried out to find connections between both air passenger and visitation levels for strategic leveraged purposes within tourism. Research methodology: Three databases were used in this analysis. The first database collects official data regarding airports such as their geographical position. The second includes data regarding the distance between WHS and international airports, while the third entails both air passenger arrivals and WHS visitation statistics. Results: Hence, this paper attempts to present the correlation that distance between WHS and International Airports has on visitation levels without claiming causation in any way. Contribution: The implications of this innovative research will stimulate future academic research interests and allow government departments, tourism entities, and other stakeholders to conduct further research and develop future strategies and action plans. Community-based tourism initiatives and their contribution to sustainable local development

Purpose: The research question/purpose is to know which CBT initiatives are still active in Brazil, as well as the challenges that exist in the sustainable local development perspective. Research Methodology: We based this exploratory research on extensive bibliographic research on the theme in addition to field observations. As a research strategy, we used the multiple case study involving two Brazilian initiatives: the Rede Tucum, in Ceará, and the Acolhida na Colônia, in Santa Catarina. Results: The main results showed that despite the difficulties associated with the CBT development, both projects have remained due to the strong articulation between the leaders, partnerships with educational institutions and entities, the methodology maintenance provided by the project’s technical team, and the diversification of tourism offer based on sustainability actions. Limitations: The limitation was access to fishing communities. Contribution: The contribution will assist in advancing studies with this theme and in tourism disciplines of local base.
