Globalization, Islam Nusantara, and contemporary character empowerment

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to analyze how Islam Nusantara may contribute to contemporary character empowerment in today’s globalization era. Research methodology: This research uses textual studies in order to assert the interaction between Islam Nusantara and contemporary character empowerment. Results: The results of this study assess local values as reflected in Islam Nusantara could enrich human and cultural tolerance as the main ideas of character empowerment. Limitations: This study explains how globalization, Islam Nusantara, and contemporary character empowerment may work together today in Indonesia. Any other aspect such as different times, places, and themes should not be concerned. Contribution: Analyses in this study may enrich social and humanitarian understanding about local Islamic culture in Indonesia, horizons of globalization, and perspectives of contemporary character empowerment. The rational choice of implementing Hamis Batar traditional rituals by the community of Rabasahain Village

Purpose: In this study, this research aimed to find out the process of implementing the Hamis Batar rite and how it means for the people of Rabasahain Village. Research methodology: The approach used in this study is qualitative. The analysis in this study uses the Rational Choice Theory. Respondents were selected by purposive sampling. 6 respondents are consisting of Village Head, 1 Traditional Head and 4 ordinary people who are often involved in the implementation of the Hamis Batar Ritual. Results: The Hamis Batar ritual is a traditional event carried out by the Rabasahain community as a form of gratitude to the creators and ancestors for the harvest obtained and its implementation depending on the agreement of the Fukun, Katuas And Ferik of the traditional house, as well as the readiness of corn as an offering. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the Hamis Batar ritual is categorized as a rational activity because it is considered to have a function and purpose for society. Limitations: This research does not cover more details about the Hamis Batar Ritual. This research only focuses on explaining the process of the Hamis Batar Ritual in brief and showing the ritual as a rational activity. Teaching to the curriculum or teaching to the test

Purpose: This research aimed to investigate teaching practices that dominates the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination class to ascertain discrepancies between the prescribed and implemented curriculum. Research methodology: The study adopted ex-post facto research design of a survey type. 1719 students and 53 mathematics teachers participated in the study. Four instruments were used for data collection: Mathematics Content Completion Inventory, Teaching Depth Rating Scale(r=0.96), Classroom Observation Checklist(r=0.95) and Mathematics Learning Task(r=0.95). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical model in SPSS version 20. Results: Results indicated that Full implementation of the prescribed curriculum ranged between 46.2% to 86.5% for 54 topics, but only three out of them were indepthly taught. Teaching activities revolved around examination preparation, with the highest percentage of 48.55 among nine different categories. Limitation: This study was limited to only one state in Nigeria, one subject and one type of high-stakes examination. It can be replicated on different school subjects to provide greater generalizability. Contribution: Results will help stakeholders strategise on reforms that will promote in-depth teaching and optimal implementation of the prescribed mathematics curriculum. Modelling association between two Multiple Response Categorical Variables (MRCV) using generalized log-linear models: the case of urban agriculture in Mutare City

Purpose: This research aimed to apply log-linear modelling to model association between multiple response categorical variables (MRCV) on urban agriculture and enhance data analysis of the paper by Basera, Chakaipa, & Dube (2020) impetus of urban agriculture on open spaces of Mutare City. Research methodology: The research data was obtained from households and farmers in Mutare City - urban and peri-urban (inclusive of plots in Weirmouth Park and Fern Valley area in December 2020. A total of one hundred and fifteen (115) household farmers were surveyed. Results: Simultaneous Pairwise Marginal Independence (SPMI) tests revealed the presence of associations. Log-linear tests revealed a perfect fit based on small standardized Pearson residuals and a strong positive association based on observed and model-predicted odds ratios on-field agricultural activities and use of herbicides. Log-linear and further application of heterogeneity tests revealed partial and near no perfect fit in other pairs of MRCVs with a strong negative association between municipality vacant places and field agricultural activities. Limitations: The research could not carry out log-linear model associations of three or more MRCVs because files exceeded 2GB in memory on both MI.test () function for SPMI tests and genloglin regressions. Contribution: The study contributes to urban agriculture planning especially in enactment of urban agriculture laws, agriculture one stop shop business centers housing farm input supply shops, farm produce shops, and determining fit support that can be rendered to urban farmers. Gender equality and the effectiveness of primary education in Katosi town council, Mukono district in central Uganda

Purpose: This study aimed to assess ways by which Gender Equality affects primary education in Mukono District Research methodology: This study is a case study that concentrates on a single institute to provide information that can be used in similar businesses to establish the effect of gender equality on primary school. A case study as the research design was preferred because it helps to measure the relationship among variables. A random sampling technique was applied in the study to produce more reliable results. Results: Results indicate that majority of pupils said that three pupils shared one text book. Also, schools only hire highly skilled teachers that a helping in the accessibility of gender equal skilled teachers that a helping in the primary education.  Limitations: The study covered only one town council in one district local government and so the results may not be generalized across the country or region. The impact of teaching methods on the performance of geography students in some selected public secondary schools in Zaria local government area, Kaduna State, Nigeria

Purpose: This study analyzes the impact of teaching methods on Geography students’ performance in Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. Six senior secondary schools: AlhudaHuda College, Barewa College, Government Secondary School Kofar Kibo, Government Girls Secondary School Kofar Gayan, Government Girls Secondary School Pada and Government Girls Secondary School, Kongo were sampled. Research methodology: 423 questionnaires were administered to respondents. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics using SPSS version 23 were used to analyze the data. Results: The results revealed that the demonstration method of teaching was the most used by teachers ahead of others (44.6%). The results also revealed that 28.3% of the students who responded say they did not know the teachers’ actual method in teaching them. Limitations: The study used not only Geography teachers as respondents, but also other subjects related to Geography. Additionally, the study covered only Zaria Local Government Secondary Schools. It can be done with only Geography teachers’ respondents in a larger scope like a state or even a country. Contribution: The study will help the Ministry of Education responsible for secondary education and all stakeholders to understand the reality of state of Secondary Education in the study area to address the problems.
